Honors project
The honors project is an important part of the students contribution to the course. The project will involve about half the students work outside the classroom. Few limitations are placed on the subject or type of project to be completed, except that the project should address in depth some topic appropriate to the theme of the course. Students are encouraged to pursue creative and original projects and to make use of the available information technologies. The projects could take many forms. Here are suggestions about a couple of possible approaches:
- A 20- to 30-page paper analyzing in depth an Information Age issue such as its impact on political, legal, communication, economic or social systems or an exploration of an enabling technology. It is expected that information technologies would be used in gathering information and perhaps also in presenting it to the class.
- An original multimedia work of art created with computer graphics and music composition software. The work and an analysis of its composition could be presented to the class.
The student and mentor will work closely together to develop a proposal for a project during the first semester. The proposals will be reviewed by the instructor. To allow time to complete the project, the proposals should be submitted no later than the eighth week of the fall semester -- that is, the deadline is Oct. 18.
Projects will be presented to the class during the last weeks of the course. Each student will have 45 minutes for the presentation. The order will be determined by random selection. This will be done by the last week of the fall semester so that class members will have plenty of time to prepare.
