Brooks Range

Chandalar River Outfitters has been offering horseback hunts in the Brooks Range since 1978. In July, we preposition our horses by trucking them 350 miles up the Dalton highway (Pipeline Road), and then ride them 80-100 miles into the Phillip Smith Mountains. I have two adjacent areas here, one of which is in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) which sets north of the Arctic Circle. I have an exclusive use permit in ANWR granted to me by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and have been guiding here for over 29 years. The terrain is one of the easiest I have ever hunted. Base camps are located on the North Fork, Your Creek, Middle Fork, and the Wind River tributaries of the Chandalar River. These are at or above the timberline. Hunting elevations vary from 1,500 to 6,500 feet.

From Fairbanks, charter flights will fly you into our base camps. Here you will team up with me, or one of my seasoned guides, who will accompany you during your hunt. Since our focus is on hunting, only a few nights will be spent in base camp. Normally, each hunting party travels with three to five horses carrying a spike camp. Accommodations in spike camps, although rugged, will provide you with necessary shelter and provisions. Meals, are not gourmet, but are hearty and plentiful. If you book with a friend, you will probably be the only hunters in the camp.
Wildlife is abundant, but more importantly there is very little resident hunting. Sheep are found on the mountainsides while moose, grizzly, caribou, wolf, and wolverine inhabit the whole area. Very few black bear are found in the area due to a healthy grizzly population. Fur bearers include lynx, fox, otter, mink, weasel, and muskrat. Small game include ptarmigan, grouse, red squirrel, parki squirrel, and snowshoe hare. Many waterfowl nest in the area. Streams provide excellent grayling fishing. Lakes support grayling, lake trout, northern pike, and whitefish.

Booking

To ensure you are booked into the hunt of your choice, you should reserve your hunt as far in advance as possible. To hold your reservation, a nonrefundable deposit of one-half the cost of the hunt is required. The balance of the cost of the hunt is due 30 days prior to the start of the hunt. If cancellation becomes necessary, and is made 90 days prior to the hunting date, your deposit will be applied to a hunt the following year, or you can substitute another hunter in your place.

We provide a variety of hunts and quality service for your hard-earned money.  Please contact me for a list of references.  Upon booking, I will provide you with a guideline packing list.  I feel confident that you'll be pleased with our service and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Mission accomplished!

If you wish to take the meat with you, a special charter can be arranged at your cost. Under Alaskan law, meat retained in your possession must be taken from the field before or at the same time as your trophies.

Meat left in camp will be given to local residents and we will be responsible for transportation costs.

Custom Outfitting

During the summer we offer custom horseback expeditions into the Brooks Range. These trips average about $175.00 per day. For an example of these trips see Horseback Adventures.
