Chandalar River Outfitterssends you greetings from Fairbanks Alaska.Chandalar River Outfitters is a sole proprietorship owned and operated by Keith C. Koontz and his son George. Following is a summery of the Koontz family and the activities which we can offer. Let's start by saying that I was born in Ohio in 1939. I attended school in Ohio and graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology. I came to Fairbanks, Alaska in August of 1961 where I studied on fellowship and earned a Master of Science Degree in Wildlife Management. My Masters project took me into Fort Yukon and the surrounding bush villages. I met many of the 'old timers' in the area (both Indian and white) and learned a lot about the culture and history of the area. I built log homes in the villages of Birch Creek, Fort Yukon, and on Beaver Creek in the White Mountains where I trapped for 5 years as a professional trapper. |

In 1966 I worked as a Wildlife Biologist in the Eskimo village of Savoonga on Saint Lawrence Island. It was my job to record the marine mammal harvest. During my time there I met my wife Velma. She is a native born Eskimo and was raised in the traditional native lifestyle. She was taught the necessary survival skills and is an excellent skin sewer. We have 4 grown children and all of them have worked in tourism. Our Family spent 12 years living on Saint Lawrence Island. While living there I hunted, fished, and trapped with the Eskimos for everything from ground squirrels to bow head whale. My son George is also a hunting guide and has been working with me since 1994. He is also an excellent Ivory carver, and has his own business; White Raven Consolidated. In 1967 I received a guide license from the State of Alaska and hold Master Guide License #A046. I have run my own guide and outfitting business since 1969. At the Present time 80% of my clients are German, with another 10% from other European countries and 10% from the U.S.A. One of the areas we hunt is the Chandalar River drainage of the Brooks Range, from which I took the name for my company. I have had the privilege of traveling to many parts of the world and have seen things from the traveler's perspective. Since I have spent most of my adult life in Alaska, living in Eskimo and Indian villages and earning a living from the recreational use of Alaska's natural resources, I feel I am well qualified to work with visitors to Alaska. There are a number of activities that we now offer:
