Tundra Expedition Chukotka, Russia

Day 1

 

Depart Nome on Bering Air bound for Provideniya, Russia.
Departure time: Nome 11:00 a.m. (Sunday)

Arrival time: Provideniya 9:30 +1 (Monday)

 

Upon arrival, proceed through Russian Customs and Immigrations. Transfer to the city of Provideniya and your accommodations. The city of Provideniya is the easternmost port in the Russian Arctic. Its population is 5000, of which five percent are either Eskimo or Chukchi. There will be an expedition briefing reception with your guide and lunch, followed by a visit to the local Museum in Provideniya. The rest of the afternoon will be spent walking and meeting with local people of Provideniya. Dinner will be a typical Russian meal.
Overnight in Provideniya

Day 2

Breakfast in the morning. We will drive from Provideniya to New Chaplino, approximately 25 kms. This is home to 500 Yupik Eskimos. After a visit at this village we will proceed to the marine mammal hunters camp "Rumilet" approximately 25 kms. Possible viewing of gray whales, seals, and sea birds. Travel by wooden hunting boat to the Bay of Gilmimil which is a fisherman’s camp. We will proceed to the tundra and set-up our base camp with "Yarangas" or tents. Our base camp will be located near a natural hot springs which we will be able to use each evening. Overnight on the Tundra.

 

Day 3

After breakfast at our camp we will meet a local reindeer herder family. We then travel by boat to Yttyram Island about 18 kms. This is an ancient Eskimo village. Lunch will be served on the tundra. We then travel to Nyneengan Island about 9 kms to view the sea bird cliffs. Return to our base camp where we will be able to fish. After dinner a visit to the natural hot springs for relaxation. Overnight at our base camp.

Day 4

After breakfast we travel by boat to the village of Yanrkaynnot, approximately 30 kms. On the way we might observe gray whales, seals and sea birds. We will be greeted by local villagers and then enjoy their village sauna. Overnight as guests of the village.

Day 5

After breakfast with the villagers, we travel by sea to the Bay Pnnkegne and visit with the local reindeer herders. After lunch on the Tundra, we return to our base camp for fishing, dinner, and a trip to the hot springs. Overnight at our base camp.

Day 6

After breakfast we travel by sea to the Bay of Abolesheva, approximately 15 kms. Here we will observe the seal rookery and take an extended walking tour on the tundra to learn about the local wildlife and flowers. We then return to our base camp for dinner a last dip into the hot springs. Overnight at our base camp.

Day 7

After breakfast we will pack up our things and travel back by sea and then truck to Provideniya. We settle back into our flat for lunch. A walk through Provideniya for last minute shopping and to view it from a new perspective after living on the tundra for days. A farewell party and dinner will mark your final night in Russia.

 

Day 8

Breakfast in the morning at your apartment. Visit to the Pioneer House for local entertainment and possibly a local greenhouse or factory. Transfer to airport for your flight back to Nome.

 

Depart Provideniya on Bering Air and return to Nome, Alaska.

Upon our arrival in Nome we proceed through United States Customs and Immigrations.

INCLUDED IN PRICE: Accommodations in Russia, air transportation to and from Provideniya. All meals, sightseeing, ground transportation and English speaking guide

NOT INCLUDED: Gratuities, alcoholic beverages. Participants of this expedition must supply their own sleeping bag, ground mat, pillow, towels and personal items. Camping equipment available to rent.
