Tbirds
take #2 seed in 2002 District 1 tournament after loss to Cougars:
East, Service, Dimond & Chugiak are the District 1 representatives to the
2002 State American Legion Tournament. They will be pitted against
District 2 foes Kenai, Fairbanks, Homer & Wasilla. The Tbirds take on
Homer at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 3rd, in the tournament opener.
2002 Region IV High School Season:
The East Tbirds win their 3rd Region IV High School Title in 4 years with a 9-1 season record. The Tbirds have an .857 winning percentage over the 4-year span (36 wins - 6 losses).
The Tbirds dropped their opening game at the Alaska state tournament to Juneau by a score of 5-4. The Juneau team used timely hitting and a gutsy, 2-strike, 2-out steal of home to edge the Tbirds. The East squad had one more hit than Juneau (7-6) but couldn't push across the runs at crucial points in the contest. The game was well played and included several big defensive plays. The Tbirds bounced back to take the 3rd place game over Homer. Anton Maxwell pitched extremely well, striking out the first 9 batters he faced and ended the game with 15 K's.
We are the baseball team for East High School, Anchorage, Alaska, and the American Legion baseball team affiliated with Post 34 in Anchorage. Our Non-profit booster club was formed to "assist, support and further develop the baseball program".
Our goal is to provide a positive competitive experience through game seasoning against top opposition. Our mission is to help Alaskan players realize their potential by providing professional instruction and the opportunity for individual development by means of athletic competition.

Our performance in the 2002 District 1 tournament once again closely resembled an old "Jeckle and Hyde" movie. We had games, well at least innings, where we looked like world beaters. We also had moments, in fact the majority of one whole game, that we looked like a JV team. We need to focus on eliminating the "dumb" mental mistakes and make certain we are ready to play from inning 1. The 9 AM game against Homer on Saturday is our first big challenge. We have not had the greatest performances in early morning games! It does not look like we will be able to work out a hotel, so players will need to demonstrate some self discipline and insure they get adequate rest on Friday night. We have been informed that all players missing the State tournament banquet will be ruled ineligible for the entire State tournament, so please let me know well in advance if any of you might have trouble making it there!
Remember, we have the talent to win it all, but we must perform on the field. That means the practice field, as well as game time. We have an opportunity before us to claim a spot as one of the best teams in Alaska baseball history, now its up to us!
