KCHU STATION PROFILE
KCHU-AM 770 is a 10,000 watt full service
public radio station in the city of Valdez with a staff of four. The station
serves seven communities around Prince William Sound and the Copper River
Basin. KCHU is repeated by translators in Cordova, Whittier, Tatitlek and
Chenega Bay and carried by two full-service licensed stations in Glennallen
and McCarthy. KCHU's signal can be heard in an area the size of Ohio serving
a population base of 10,000 plus people. Currently there are around 575
KCHU members with a listenership made up of a variety independent communities.
KCHU can be heard at 770 in Valdez, a large
rural port city with a population of 4,500. Its economy is bolstered by
Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Marine Terminal.
In Cordova you can tune in to 88.1 FM. Cordova is large fishing port with
a population of 2,500. Glennallen is 150 miles north of Valdez on the Richardson
Highway and the sight of KXGA-FM, a 3,200 watt licensed station, located
on top of Tolsona ridge, that can be heard as far north as Tok, West to
Matanuska Glacier, and east to the quaint town of Chitina--gateway to Wrangell
St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in America. KXGA also
serves the Copper River Basin, home to a diverse population of people largely
living a subsistence lifestyle. Both Glennallen and Cordova receive KCHU's
signal via a 56 kb telephone circuit providing a clear and reliable signal.
KCHU can also be heard in McCarthy home to
KXKM-FM a licensed station located in the heart of Wrangell St. Elias National
Park. The station is unique in that it's powered by solar panels part of
the year.
At 88.1 FM two translators repeat KCHU in
Native Alaskan Villages on Prince William Sound in Chenega Bay and Tatitlek.
Our farthest translator on the Sound is located in Whittier at 88.3 FM
thus completing one of the largest public radio networks in America served
by a single radio station--KCHU AM.
