Information |
Alpacas are originally from South America. They differ from
llamas in size and usage. Alpacas are bred for their wonderful fleece and
weigh about 150#. Llamas where bred as beast of burden weighing 350# or
more. We currently have seven alpacas. Alpacas do very well in Alaska;
there are about 160 animals in the state spread around 14 different ranches
(data current 9/1/00). We shear our alpacas around the end of May to ensure
that they have enough time to grow some fleece back before the winter.
Anyone interested in purchasing raw or carded fleece should contact us
as soon as possible in order to be placed on our sales list. Current colors
are black, beige/cream, light brown, and dark brown. We plan our crias
(baby alpacas) births for June and July. If you wish to see the crias plan
your visit during the summer. For more information please use the links
on our link page. Please visit a ranch to be enchanted by these marvelous
animals. Our herd is protected from the bears and coyotes by our stock
dogs. We have two male Kuvaszok, Trooper and Khan. And there mentor a mutt
named RP. The kuvasz is a livestock protection breed. They are not herding
dogs. Their function is to maintain the status quo on the ranch. The are
ever vigilant for interlopers. This year they have run off a brown bear
twice. They fight the coyotes about three times a week year around. The
have very thick coats and stay outside all the time. If you want more information
ask us or visit the link page and click on the livestock protection link.
Our daughters love to play tour guide so come make their day and visit
our ranch. Please call ahead for directions. We are about 30 minutes outside
Soldotna. Soldotna is about 2 ½ hours south of Anchorage. Anchorage
is in south central Alaska on the only road. If you can't find Alaska don't
look at a map we really aren't located off of Baja California <G>.
