Comp Air 6 Widebody

BIG is a word that is heard frequently at Aerocomp, Inc. The big Comp Monster and Comp Air 6 kit airplanes have consistently drawn the attention of "full-size" people. Because of their roominess, headroom, and legroom, these aircraft have appealed to many big people.

Steve Young and Ron Lueck (Aerocomp’s owners) enjoy listening to their customers’ comments. When customers said, "Yes, the airplane is what I want. It’s big, ...but I wish it was bigger," they put their designers back to work.

The result: a new widebody version of the Comp Air 6.

Now, with a full 46-1/2" wide cabin, there is plenty of room for football players, basketball players, or Rambo and his gear. Given current trends in the homebuilt aircraft industry, some builders will probably just use the extra room to install the fanciest, plushest interiors possible.

The first CA6 Widebody is currently being assembled at the factory, where it will join the fleet of Comp Air 6 factory demonstrators. The factory is busy filling current orders at present, so it will be a couple months before they have time to finish and fly the new widebody. Plan on checking it out in person at the Sun ‘n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Florida this spring.

The extra cabin width in the new Comp Air 6 Widebody is NOT just "elbow room". Instead of merely bulging the doors and windows, this new, wider cabin is full width from floor to ceiling.

If it’s headroom you’re looking for, the ceiling is 53" above the floor. Shorter people can actually stand up inside this airplane! Now THAT’s big!

Here are a few extra features that come standard with the new widebody version:

  1. a new "raked" windshield. This windshield is more rounded, and sloped more gently, than previous windshields. It has been optically corrected to minimize distortion. It is also stronger and more aerodynamic for operations at high speeds. It’s sleeker appearance will appeal to many people, and it’s improved strength eliminates the need for seaplane torsion braces.
  2. designed for higher horsepower. The new Comp Air 6 Widebody is designed for use with engines up to 350 hp. It will be possible to achieve cruise speeds as high as 250 mph TAS with this airplane. As an extra bonus, it is designed for, and capable of, limited sport aerobatics. Now THAT’s something you don’t often see in an airplane of this size.
  3. higher gross weight (3600 lbs), and bulkhead-free interior. Heavy duty brakes and landing gear round out the list of extra features supplied with every new Comp Air 6 Widebody.
