Winter/Spring

Tsaina Lodge tucked into the mighty and majestic Chugach Mountains, gets blanketed by North America's largest annual snowfall (up to 975 inches!). Winter activities range from mild to wild. World Extreme Ski Champions Doug & Emily Coombs, of Valdez Heli-Ski Guides, are based at the lodge, guiding film crews and other hard core skiers and snowboarders from around the world on high adrenaline helicopter adventures into the deep Chugach powder. Ski unfathomably steep couloirs. Snowboard an eight mile long cruiser run through a natural park that only mother nature could have made. Terrain is accessible via hiking, mushing, snowcat, snowmobile, airplane or helicopter. Like the five species of Pacific salmon who return to spawn every summer, the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world return to ski/ride the Chugach Mountains every spring. Experience or view world class ice climbing, paragliding and snowmobiling. Mush through the vast mountainscape with a team of Alaskan Huskies. Snowshoe beneath a colorful northern light performance. Thompson Pass Winter/Spring events include the Valdez International Ice Climbing Festival, the World Extreme Ski Competition, King of the Hill Snowboard Competition, and the Snowmachine Hill Climb.

Summer

The Summers at Tsaina Lodge also offer an endless palate of adventure ranging from extreme whitewater rafting/kayaking and mountain biking to more serene experiences like wildflower, mushroom, and berry gathering, and fishing (lakes, rivers and open water). Explore historical gold and copper mines. Photograph the rich wildlife habitat (grizzly and black bears, moose, wolves, lynx and mountain goats...). Nearby Prince William Sound's two thousand acres is home to, among others, stellar sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, dall porpoises, and whales (orcas, humpbacks, greys and minkes). Sitka black-tailed deer and bear comb the beaches. Bird species are abundant from the sea to the mountain pass. Trumpeter swans, blue herons, bald eagles, puffins, commorants, oyster catchers, magpies, arctic terns, and ptarmigan are some of the many likely sightings. A wide variety of readily accessible biospheres also exist including taiga, tundra, rainforest, glaciers and fjiords.
