A NOTE FROM HEADQUARTERS

The California Spangled became a "closed breed" over twenty years ago, when the last of its original ancestors was introduced into the breeding program. Since then, no further outcrossings have been allowed. And DNA testing identifies us as distinct from all other domestic breeds. But the real purpose behind it all is to symbolize a fulfillment of the imagination. Solutions to those great problems which face our future need not come from the obvious places, but continually spring in unexpected ways from our inner resources.

In 1997 and on into the coming century, the issues of wildlife preservation and a healthful global environment will remain our primary interest. We have always thought of the Spangled as a kind of little unicorn, or ambassador for its wild cousins. And as they are still extremely rare, membership in the CSCA is not limited to persons who actually own a Spangled. It is open to any who simply share our concern and care for the planet.
