Adventures - miserable, ill-fated, thrilling, and exciting - that's what keeps Peter going. "Small adventures," grins Peter. "I don't need to go for the gold like scaling K2 or Annapurna." they lived to make it back to Glacier Bay and crash a farewell party for a departing park ranger on board the National Park Service boat.

As one ranger remembers, "Peter was pretty happy to be back. He tied his boat up to the stern of our boat and even though it was sinking in our wake, Peter kept right on drinking beer. Finally, we had to let them off. The last we saw of Peter and Dave they were sitting in a boat half full of freezing water, bailing furiously to stay afloat in the middle of the bay."

Adventures - miserable, illfated, thrilling, and exciting - that's what keeps Peter going. "Small adventures," grins Peter. "I don't need to go for the gold like scaling K2 or Annapurna."

In a way, it's like his child-hood admiration for tugboat operators. He never wanted to be the captain of a big ship. He always thought "the most honorable profession" would be a tugboat captain.

"You're not going for glory. You're just out on the water, working hard."
