The small tug RAMONA pushes or pulls barges loaded with freight for villages on the Yukon River and its tributaries. This is a tough job, performed by tough men and women. No navigation aides on these rivers, no Corps of Engineers to dredge out the shallow spots, and not much help when you get stuck on a gravel bar.
Loading the barges is high science, requiring detailed consideration of which villages will be visited first, and what side of the river they are located.
