In the midst of the Great Depression, a man named Olan Mills and his wife Mary, began a photo restoration business out of a modest wooden shack in Selma, Alabama. In the year 1932 photographic portraits were a luxury few families could afford, but The Mills had a vision: They wanted to provide affordable portraiture to families at all economic levels, even those living in rural areas.
To accomplish this they took the studio to the people. While Mr. Mills traveled from door to door as salesman and photographer, Mrs. Mills, an artist, added color and finishing touches to the portraits.
Today, Olan Mills is the world's leading producer of family portraits, capturing 40 million images on film every year. With the help of more than 16,000 employees, Olan Mills provides quality portraits to schools, churches, clubs businesses, and of course, individuals and families through more than 950 studios in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
