I Travelled To San Diego In February 2002
I Performed At Java Joe's In Ocean Beach, California - Here's A Review!
"Ocean Beach is a place where breakfast can still be had for $2.00 down the street from the International Hostel and where strangers are willing to talk about music and their wrotweiler at dusk on the beach. In the middle of busy San Diego, Ocean Beach has a small town feeling and Java Joes is no exception. Joe’s has an atmosphere that smacks of serious music lovers and friends who come to hear the music and not to chat. When the show starts all eyes are on the performers including employees behind the bar.

Anchorage-based acoustic rock artist Andy Baker performed four original songs amid other talented local artists at the SongWriters Showcase on Saturday February 16, 2002. Due to City permitting snafu, Java Joe’s is at present operating with no sound equipment. Performers have not found lack of sound to be a problem and it was not a barrier for Andy. Andy stepped off the stage with a powerful delivery of his songs Broken Bottles, Hole In Your Heart and Man of Color. Each melody sounded unique from the previous. Andy’s final song Queenstown was well received, a song about making good friends and traveling out of the cold darkness of Alaska in winter. Andy shares his love of travel and adventure in his songs and takes listeners on a journey with him. His voice was edgy and engaging.

Comedy was also part of the evening. Berkley Hart sang a delightful song about acronyms with a blend of country pop. Comedian Jose Sinatra utilized Fisher Price toys as props to get the audience roaring in a tribute to Java Joe himself, who was in attendance. Carmaig Deforest from LA delivered several lilting songs of dark poetry that were thought provoking.

Alaskans can expect a friendly welcome at Java Joes, real live music, and no expresso machines competing with the performers. Joe’s is a place for serious music lovers and up and coming artists to showcase their craft." - MaryAnn Kenison, San Diego

On my bio page, I talk about this cool guitar player named Doug Stambaugh that I met back in 1983 at Penn State. Doug taught me how to play rock guitar and took me to a whole new level of playing!!! Well he since has moved to Poway, CA with his wife Jodie and I was lucky enough to surprise him and his friends with guitar at his birthday bash!!!..in honor of the occassion he quickly his produced his Alvarez and were jamming again..he's still got the magic!
