Thanks to everyone for bringing in addresses to some of your favorite web pages. Some good ones we looked at include Jim Valley's Rainbow Planet and Awareness Corporation which had an interested Java application that you may be able to see from your home computers. I owe all of you an apology because I didn't prepare for this weeks class at all. It was pretty obvious by the many mistakes that I made, some of which you aren't even aware of yet. So, I'm stepping up to the plate here to correct some misconceptions: Use your wordprocessor at home to begin building your homepage.
Remember to save as docname.html and save the document where you can find it (for example,
to your desktop or a new file titled webpage maybe). Then open your web browser,
select "File/Open" and "Browse" to locate your HTML document. Your document
will open and look just like a web page. Feel free to use any graphics on my
sight to practice including pictures in your HTML document. Following
is coding for a photo. Just remember to enclose the code
in sharp brackets: We'll cover this again in class or you can email any questions. Chapters 1-3 of your textbook has information on the basic elements of a web page to assist in the process. Good luck and let me know if you need help. | ||

HTML can be compared to shorthand as most of the "coding" is simply a reduction of the words. For example, the command for adding a picture is IMG SRC=. This is an abbreviation of IMAGE SOURCE= which tells the system where to look for your picture. Simple, isn't it? By using the commands "View/Source" from your web browser, you can see how other pages are put together. It is good practice to look at coding for things that you like on a web page and things that did not work. When you are able to read HTML, you can fix what isn't working (for example, images that are trying to load from a hard-drive rather than the WWW). A review of the following pages provide instruction on good HTML practices: |
