4. Charlie William (Grandpa) Knight
Dad said: about the Kentucky period... Poppa worked for L&N Railroad. Dad (Charles Jr.) was 1 year old. Then they moved to Irvine and Rivena, small KY towns.
Back in Tenn. they lived on Carter street in Riverside area of Columbia. Paid $12 a month rent. First it was a red house, then later another one close by. Across the street were the Whitakers (whose daughter, Elizabeth, later married Dan.)
According to Priscilla....Nannie and GPa lived with Aunt E. and Priscilla in Riverside. (Uncle Dan bought the house and then went away. 405 Carter St. Momma Annie lived across the street. The land went to the river. GPa had horses, pigs, chickens, etc. They fished off the back. Priscilla was 4 at that time. GPa was 50 when Priscilla was born.
Nannie and Grandpa worked cutting fabric.
Grandpa got a gold Hamilton Railroad watch which he treasured. At one time he hocked it at a jewelery store for $12. He sent Dad back to get it. Dad still has it. Dad went back for it. Grandpa said you can have it. I have a wrist watch.
From Martha Cross (grandaughter of Vorse).......
Charlie and Vorse were a comical pair. Always kept the family laughing. Annie and Lillie were serious. Minnie Standridge was in Nashville. Rebecca and Thelma visited from the city and brought jewelery in the suitcase. Martha, country girl, always was excited to see the jewelry and makeup of the city girls. (See individuals for more stories.)
Dear Dianna, It was such a nice surprise to get your E-mail today. Yes, I
remember some of grandpa's sisters & brother. I was quite small but I
remember visiting aunt Lilly and her husband out in the country. She was a
very tall, soft spoken sweet lady and I liked her. Now aunt Thelma {not
Thelme} was quite different. She was a New York City lady, who would leave
you to believe she knew more than everyone else. In fact, Mom and I went
home with her after her husband died so she wouldn't have to be alone. It
was a typical small New York apt. I just remember thinking there was so much
car noise and wondering why anyone would want to move there from Tenn. Now
aunt Rebecca used to visit Nannie & Grandpa , and I remember her as being
always dressed up . I think she lived in Detroit. I vaguely remember being
with uncle Vohres. Mom may remember more, and I am sure uncle Charles does.
As you probably know we will be in Baltimore next week for Beth's wedding.
On our drive up with Mom I'll try to find out more. Keep in touch...this is
fun. LOVE PriscillaSSN 408-03-5742

5. Clemmie Lee (Nannie) Pearson
Pearson family mainly near Styversville
Mainly Church of Christ near Mary Hill's home.
Brothers Mark, Mayland, Flunoil moved to Detroit to get a better job.
According to Priscilla, Nannie was sick when she moved to Bear Creek. She got even sicker after leaving there. She possibly overdosed on arthritis medicine. Also, the medicine masked depression problems.
6. Clifford (Earnest Clifford) Dawson
Notes from Ernest Dawson (son of Clifford)---Great man, hard worker, good personality. Kept things to himself.
Confidential note ~Grandmother declared to herself that she would leave him right after Mom was born because he made such a fuss about having to get up in the middle of the night to go get the doctor to deliver the baby. At the time Clifford and Grandmother were living in the house with the rest of the family. Clifford tried to get friendly with Eula. After this incident with Dude, Momma and Grandmother started watching Mom real close so he wouldnt steal her. Mom learned to dislike him from that.
This information was provided by Alleene, niece of Clifford.
Hi Dianna,

worked until a month or so before he passed away.
He belonged to the Baptist Church and would do any thing for any one if it
was money you needed or the last bite of food he had .He worked hard every
since I can remember, I would say he was a humble man, his brothers said he
was the best Dawson in the family but hate to tell you Ernest is like him he
even sounds like him and looks like him I said as long as Ernest lived Uncle
Clifford would. My sister and I use to go in summer and stay with them some
and they also had Aunt Oma's brother's kids for a year or so.

--------------------------------------
Kathy, Alleene's daughter, has memories of Clifford:I was 2 or so and i remember sitting on their porch and literally
eating my way thru a whole watermelon by myself. mom completes the story
like this: her mom (grandma...clifford's sister) got all over uncle clifford
for giving me the whole melon. he said, lucy i'll go buy more watermelons
for the other kids but im enjoying watching this baby eat this one. that's
not a direct quote but the essence of the story.my grandmother lived for a time behind uncle clifford and aunt oma. she had
an outhouse and i remember bathing in a bathtub in the kitchen, warmed from
the stove. its one of my favorite memories. we still have the tub!
Kathy
---------------------------------------------Mom says Grandmother was affraid Clifford would steal her (mom) so she never handed out much information. Also, Mom wasn't allowed to meet him.
Mildred Craig remembers Clifford. His grandaughter Carol Wood has a place next to Jacks.
Dude was the diplomat
Gladys happy go lucky
Grandmother agressive one Worked for every dollar she could get
Brother was told he would never amount to anything. so he didn't (until later, when he became a successful businessman)
in the 4th grade when Mom (Georgie) passed him after the 3rd. He turned out
out different. Quit his carbon plant job when they wouldn't give him a
truck and started a welding business out of his own home. Did very well
His daughter has bad migraines. her first husband died of cancer.Grandmother took after Poppa's side of the family;. (Tylers)

Re: directions to the farm where Seavy Hight and Willie lived ---from
Culleoka drive to the Central Church. It is red brick, Presbyterian, and on
the right. (Seavy helped to build it.) Turn right on that road. Go till
you see Seavy Hight road on the left. Take that left turn, drive till the
bridge. The bridge is just after the Hight farm place. So, if you cross
bridge, you went too far. The left side of the road was 50 acres where the
house stood, the garage/smokehouse and the barn. The right side of the
road is another 50 acres also belonging to them. Last time I was there, it
was planted in cotton. Mostly the creek was sort of deep in the creekbed,
but once I saw it rise up to the foundation of the house. Across the bridge
on the right is the Floyd Craig property. As to when Gladys was born, Mom calculates it to be about 1910, or 1911.
Gladys is the third born, and James (Sonny, Sally,
Brother), was the fourth. James has a son who is a minister. His daughter,
Donna Faye, lives on Bear Creek Pike and is married to a prominent man.
Inez, the wife, is not too well, having a form of Alzheimers, which must
have developed recently, since she was fine when I visited three years ago.As to the chronology of Willie's life: She quit school after 11th grade to
marry, and give birth. Mom was 5 years old when Grandmother went back to
school to finish 12'th grade. At the same time, Mom went to First grade.
So they were both going at the same time. Grandmother graduated from Culleoka High in 1929. During the 5 year break from school was when they
worked at the cantalope factory, and also the tomato factory. They wrapped
tomatos in paper for shipping. They did it as a family. Mom admits she
probably wasn't much help, being small. After graduation, Grandmother went to secretarial school in Nashville. She
boarded there for two years. During that time she met Seavy. After they
married, she didn't work again until the war.During the war there was a teacher shortage; the county supervisor searched
school records to find people who might qualify as teachers. Grandmother
was asked to start substituting, which led to full time teaching. In
addition to Bryant Station school and Riverside, she also taught at Bear
Creek. She attended workshops to get a permanent teaching certificate. In
the 1960's she attended Peabody College, then UT at Murfreesboro, then
Knoxville, to earn her Bachelors degree. While at Knoxville she won a
scholarship in civil aeronautics. As a result of that she spent a summer in
the mid sixties flying with the Air Force in a training group. As to Alzheimers... I have always felt
in my heart that she was fine until the school district retired her. When
an active, dedicated person is put out to pasture, it cannot be good. But
that is not the current medical approach, so draw your own conclusions. One other thing mom said this morning was that an Austin man, sort of older,
used to take care of all the walkers who had to come from the Holler. He
must have walked with them to see them safe. I heard this same story from
Aunt Dude (Eula). But at this moment I don't have his name. (By the way,
that is a long walk.)============
Willie Tyler Dawson Hight is buried in Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, , 7250
Washington Blvd., Baltimore, MD., next to Seavy Hight. After she and Clifford Dawson parted ways,. She also worked packing cantalopes.
details. She then went back to finish her education and became a teacher.
At times she was going to school the same as my mom, her daughter, since
Laura sort of raised them as siblings. I will get details of the missing
time, but starting in the late '40's she was teaching at Fountain Hights,
and Bryant Station, a school which was grade 1-12. She was the Principal,
teacher of grades 8-12, bus driver, and President of the PTA. It was a two
class-room school with lunch room and outhouse. Angeline Brown was the
other teacher. I went there for First Grade. In the mid-sixties,
Grandmother went to summer school in Knoxville to get a college degree.
When Bryant Station closed, she transferred to Riverside school in Columbia
to teach 4th grade. She was very proud of her degree. Of all her stuff, I
chose her class ring as a keepsake because it meant so much to her. She was
way ahead of the women's lib. movement because she held many leadership
positions and there are official photos where she is the only woman in the
group. She was also in the B&PW club. (business and professional womens).
Her Christian faith was a big part of her life. She had many Bibles and all
of them show her marks and study aids. When she was almost 70, the school
district enforced the mandantory retirement schedule. She came to Maryland
to live with her daughter, my mom,Georgie. Seavy Hight, who was 20 years
her senior, was already living with Mom. Mom cared for both of them till
their deaths. Seavy was in a nursing home 6 years and died in 1989, at 105,
of heart failure during surgery. Willie had declining memory for several
years from about '87 until about '93, when Alzheimers was diagnosed. She
was in a nursing home for about 2 years, when the Alzheimers claimed her
life in 1995. Mom visited each of them every single day they were in the
nursing home. She took Pa his fried chicken and fried brains. She took
Grandmother her milkshakes, and kept her hair fixed nice. They were not
abandoned.Until they moved to MD, they never left the house on the river, at the
bridge on Seavy Hight Road.D.
-----------------
In my young years on that farm, they heated with a huge wood stove in the kitchen, and fires in the other rooms. My Grandmothe Wille spoiled me horribly. She would fire up the wood cook stove, heat a pillow by the stove, CARRY me from the warm bed to the warm pillow so I could eat some oatmeal, never letting my feet touch the cold floor. She always made me feel like a queen, even when I was older. D.

Mom says Raymond Brown was a close friend of Grandmothers.
Another of her close friends was Ruth Pearson, the sister of Dad's mother.
