Chugach mountains near Anchorage

Folks who've been here say ...

Q. What didn't you know before you came that you wish you had known?
"We left Bellingham on the ferry without cabin reservations. We thought sleeping in the lounge chairs would be OK for 3 nights. It wasn't. I would not do this again without a cabin. We also did not get to spend enough time in Ketchikan, and Juneau.

I would have been more inclined to take more flying trips, especially to see bears.

We learned that the year 2002 might be a super year for viewing the Aurora Borealis in the winter. I am not normally a "winter" person but will seriously consider going to Fairbanks to catch a glimpse of this wonder."

Q. What was most memorable about your visit?

"Boy that is a difficult question. Probably The Fly/Drive tour from Fairbanks to Prospect Creek then back the Dalton Highway. We stopped several places coming south on the haul road. Some of the things we saw/did seeing included a boat being hauled to Prudhoe Bay, walking in the tundra and picking blueberries, taking a boat ride on the Yukon River, and stopping at Joy, AK, buying the book written by the original occupants of Joy, then reading the book TWICE and trying to imagine what that experience must have been like. I'm not sure the the Riverboat Discovery out of Fairbanks was any less memorable, and the bus trip into Eielson Visitor's Center in Denali and and camping on the Homer Spit and watching all the Silver Salmon fishermen and all the other things that we did. I have just completed my "Trip Story" to illustrate my pictures, post cards and pamphlets which we gathered on the trip. It is 53 pages long! Loved it and would love to go back."

Q. What would you like to forget about it?

" The Rain!"

Q. What didn't you know before you came that you wish you had known?

"Weather in summer can be warm and I would need to wear warmer clothing."

Q. What was most memorable about your visit?

"Sledding and ice skating, trying to learn how to ski and waking up to see moose out your window."

Q. What would you like to forget about it?

"The fact that I couldn't do everything that I wanted to."
-- 'Empress of the world,' Chatanooga, Tennessee

Q. What didn't you know before you came that you wish you had known?

The ferry schedules and how they work. We were never able to catch a ferry.

Q. What was most memorable about your visit?

Valdez is the most incredible place on earth. Seward has the most beautiful bay area.

Q. What would you like to forget about it?

That we waited too late in the season to see Alaska. Most of the scenery was covered in clouds in late September.

Q. What didn't you know before you came that you wish you had known?

The roads.

Q. What was most memorable about your visit?

Every where was memorable. No matter if you were in your car in the middle of nowhere, it was beautiful. There isn't one road, place or body of water that I drove, saw or ferried on than was not one of of kind.

Also, the people in all of Alaska were polite and made me feel like I was one of their's.

So I am unable to pick out the most memorable thing about the visit.

I traveled about 1500 miles in almost every side road that I could find. I never found an unattractive place.

Q. What would you like to forget about it?

The thing that I would like to forget about is, that I didn't take enough pictures, so am going to have to go back up with enough film not to miss anything.
