Jay Mills and his sons, Ray, Manning, Fay and Jay

The Mills Family

Until the Web came along to make genealogy quests easier, the earliest Mills to appear on the family tree is Harlow, who lived in Ohio. One of his four sons, Manning Bidwell Mills, moved to Iowa after marrying Ursula F. Stone on Feb. 1, 1843, in Ashtabula, Ohio. They settled in Clay, Washington County.
Recently obtained information extends the Mills family line back to Edwarde Mille (Mills) who married Thamsyn Frenchson in November 1575 in Exeter, England. Amasa Mills and several of his sons were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. His military career began in the French and Indian War in the 1750s, and he ended his service as a colonel. Ursula Stone's father, James Stone, was captain of Company 2, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment, 4th Brigade, Ohio Militia, in the War of 1812.
