Habitat and Distribution: Chinook range from southern California to northern Alaska. They travel great distances upriver to spawn. Often entering small streams to spawn, they prefer large cold rivers. Coho) Also known as Coho Salmon, Silvers start entering the Kenai River in late July. Silver salmon fishing peaks in mid-August and good fishing continues through October. These fish average 12-16 pounds although the state record is 26 pounds. Habitat and Distribution: Coho Salmon are found from California to Alaska and as far as Japan. Coho Salmon have been transplanted to the Great Lakes with efforts continuing to establish coho in many large freshwater lakes. Coho Salmon spawn in gravel in freshwater rivers near the sea or far upstream.
Red Salmon (Sockeye) The Red, also known as Sockeye Salmon, start their first run in the Kenai River during mid-June. The second Sockeye run begins in Mid-July and goes strong until mid-August. Sockeye are best fished from the edge of the river as they migrate in close proximity to the shoreline. Pink Salmon Pink salmon enter the river on even numbered years in numbers so plentiful, it appears you could walk across the river on their backs, from late July and continue through the summer until mid-August. Dolly Varden Habitat and Distribution: Found in northern California to Alaska and sometimes as far as Japan. Primarily bottom feeders, Dolly Varden are seldom found near the surface. They are likely to be found near drop-offs preferring to hide under rocks, logs and other debris.
