I was lucky enought to be stationed at the Anchorage Flight Service Station, also known as the Merrill Field Flight Service Station. It was located next to the new Merrill Tower, which was built right before the FSS was torn down. They tried to get it on the historical register, but the City Of Anchorage still wanted it torn down. Originally, the FAA paid a$1/year (minimum allowed) for rent. When the FSS moved to Kenai (they offered the FAA a free building), Anchorage jacked up the rent to some crazy amount. Jobs lost, economy suffers.
Anyway, this page really wasn't meant to be about that, but rather my time there. I worked on a whole variety of electronics engineering projects, including the Bader Indicator. Other projects were the RMVC, AMCC and CARMS. This was as close as I ever got to living my dream- true electronic engineering, where you design stuff and make it work. Alas, I live in Alaska, and there isn't much opportunity for "true" engineering.
First was Dan Vandermeer. He was the head honcho assigned by Robin Masek. Mike Holland was his right hand man. Dan worked on the AMCC.
