"Cover County Golf Course"

Imagine...

Your landscaping company is competing for the job of building a golf course for the residents of nearby Cover County. The Cover County commissioners will be reviewing several designs before they actually offer the contract to build the golf course. Your team has been chosen to provide the design that the commission will be reviewing.

The golf course is to be built on a plot of land that was donated by a local patron. Since the goal of the project is to provide a golf course that is accessible to every member of the community, it is important to keep the costs of construction to a minimum. Therefore, the entire golf course must be built on the donated land.

The county commissioners will decide on a design based on the following criteria: how well does the design meet the given requirements; how easy it will be for people to navigate the course; and how innovative and artistic is the diagram or model.

The county commissioners expect your team to provide a scale diagram or three-dimensional model along with a description of the specifications of each hole on the golf course.

Things to Consider...

1) How will you approach planning the layout of the golf course? What materials will you need in planning, designing, and modeling your golf course?

2) Players begin each hole at the tee and finish at the cup. How will this affect the layout of the holes on your course? Players begin each round of golf at the 1st hole and end at the 18th. How will this affect the layout of your golf course?

3) On many golf courses there is a clubhouse where players can purchase equipment, food, and beverages before and after a round of golf. Are you planning on building a clubhouse? In many cases the clubhouse is located near the 9th hole as well. Will this be a consideration in your design?

4) The area required to build the golf course can be estimated by using rectangles to approximate the shape of each hole. What is the minimum area of land that would be needed to construct a golf course which meets all of the requirements? What is the maximum area of land?

5) What is the area of the land that has been reserved for the Cover County golf course? Is the amount of land sufficient to meet the conditions set by the county commissioners? Many golf courses include a driving range and a practice putting green near the clubhouse. If you have sufficient land will these items be part of your design considerations?

6) Provide a scale model or diagram of your golf course design. Along with the diagram or model, prepare a list of the specifications for each hole including the length of each hole, the par of each hole, and the sand traps and water hazards of each hole. A possible option for some of you would be to create an electronic presentation, diagram and presentation.

7) How many sprinkler heads are needed to ensure that all of your tees, fairways, greens, and roughs can be sufficiently watered? Estimate the maximum number of sprinkler heads that would be necessary to water the entire area of land.

Cover County Golf Course...

The Cover County Commissioners have turned over the area of land which is shown in the diagram. The commissioners would like an 18-hole golf course built on the land. The golf course will be used by residents of Cover County. The commissioners ask that the course have four par 3 holes, ten par 4 holes, and four par 5 holes. The lengths of the par 3 holes must be between 120 and 180 yards; the length of the par 4 holes must be between 250 and 380 yards; and the lengths of the par 5 holes must be between 400 and 500 yards. For each hole the fairways can be between 20 and 60 yards wide. they also ask that the course have between 24 and 30 sand traps and contain a lake that is approximately 4,000 square yard in area and borders at least three holes.

A system of water sprinklers must also be designed o ensure that all of the greens, fairways, and roughs can be watered. Sprinkler heads may be located on the fairway or rough, but not on the green. The radius of the area covered by each sprinkler is 100 yards.
