Problem: Unable to Receive Email
(Norton AntiVirus)
Press F11 key for full screen view (Internet Explorer)
For some reason, occasionally you will see Email error messages saying your mail server cannot be reached and you should check your username/password setup. If you have Norton AntiVirus 2001 running this is probably the cause of the problem. This page describes how to reset your system to receive mail, and then to reset the Norton AntiVirus email protection.
Note: I do not know what is causing this error and I have so far been unable to find out anything about it from Norton. I do know that in just about every installation of Norton AntiVirus that I have done, this error occurs occasionally. I plan to continue researching and when I find the ultimate "Fix", I'll let you know.
In Outlook or Outlook Express, click the Tools drop down menu and select "Accounts"
Click the "Mail" tab
Select your email account
Click "Properties"
Click the "Server" Tab
Change the POP (Post Office Protocol) setting from:
POP3.norton.antivirus
to:
POP.alaska.net (Internet Alaska)
mail.gci.net (GCI Internet)
mail.ptialaska.net (PTI Internet)
mail.chugach.net (Chugach Internet) or directly to help page
customcpu.com (Customcpu) or directly to help page
7. Change your "Account Name" From:
username/pop.alaska.net
to:
username "This is usually just your email address without the @gci.net or whatever the servers name is."
8. Click OK on the POP Properties Window and Close on the Accounts Properties Window
Back in Outlook Express, Click "Send and Receive". Your email server should not report any errors now. Remember, any new messages (and their attachments) haven't been scanned for viruses, so you should save them to your Desktop and scan the Desktop with Norton before opening the attachment. Or you could just delete any attachments right in Outlook Express.
