Brilliant blue icebergs towering above the water glittering and rolling in the bay, the thundering crash as a wall of ice topples into the sea, these are the images you take away from a cruise to the glacier!
The steep walls of the winding fjords are polished by ice and rock. Waterfalls white as veils cascade from the snow fields above. We watch for goats at play on the ledges, and seals basking on the ice floes. Bears clamber across the rocks, scraping barnacles to eat or grazing on berries.
At one bay, we can hike the sandy outwash plain for a mile, over ice polished stones the colors of bird eggs to the terminus of a retreating glacier. There we are able to climb up on the ice, and listen to the groaning, hissing sounds of the glacier in action. Standing on the glacier, we can see far back into the snow fields that spawn the rivers of ice.
