One area of woodturning that' always facinated me is segmented forms.  There's so much room for experimentation and the best part is the wood is usually free.  At least if you're not too picky.  Seems I've got a ton of oak cutoffs that other folks have given me, and I don't even like oak!  Sigh.  How come nobody every has a box full of rosewood cutoffs they're looking to get rid of ?
No matter.  I like clean and simple and that's a good place to start with segment work.  More complex designs can be added as skills are developed.  One thing I've never liked much tho is tossing every type of wood in to a pile and turning it.  Lotsa color and contrasting grain doesn't make a pretty bowl in my eyes.   Your milage may vary.

Wood: Cherry, cocobolo (or something similar).  A friend gave me a box of odds and ends that were left behind in a house he moved into. The cocobolo was in it along with a bunch of other "exotics".  Doesn't really matter what you call the wood;  I just call it pretty.

Size: 4 1/8"h x 5 1/4"w

Woods: Maple, purpleheart, walnut.
I've never been quite satisfied with the finial I did on this one.  I may turn it off and replace it with one more akin to the finial on the oak jar to the right.

Size: 5"h x 5 1/2" w

Wood: Oak, hickory, willow
I ebonized the oak using the old rusty steel wool in vinegar solution.  I didn't know if the hickory would go off as well, but it didn't which I was happy about.  I didn't try doing the willow at all.

Size: 5 3/8"h x 5 1/2"w

Wood: Oak, mahagony, sycamore
A simple canister using several scrap pieces.  There may be a fourth wood in there but I made this a couple years ago and can't remember - I actually did a run of 8 or 9 at once using whatever scraps I had on hand which complimented each other to some degree.

Size: about 8" or 9" high.

Wood:  Oak
These are a few coffee jars that I did afew years ago.  The one on the left was ebonized with the rusty steel wool in vinegar trick.

Size: 6" high, give or take.

Wood: Poplar, mahagony, rosewood
Had a few scraps laying around, and this is the end result.  I wanted to play a bit with compound miters to see what they'd look like - hence the angled bands.

Size: 4.5" high by 4.25" wide
