Fund Raising Auction
One of the most rewarding events at the Society's regional conference is the fund-raising auction for the Alaska regional scholarship fund. Through the generous donations of our members, the Society was able to give scholarship awards to two outstanding students, Spencer Reardon and Mary Martinez.
We will be holding the auction at the Traditional Feast at Central Jr. High. We welcome donations (all tax deductible) for the auction. I joke with my mother that she is helping send a new batch of students to college. She has donated the most amazing things, from traditionally carved wooden spoons to a beautiful Tlingit dancer jigsaw puzzle. That jigsaw puzzle was really sought after. Now, it is helping Spencer Reardon complete his degree in Wildlife Biology. One year, the hot item was fish picking hooks, donated by Adelheid Herrmann. Those hooks are helping fund Mary's degree in Environmental Engineering.
We invite you to bring items that we can auction off. If you don't bring anything else, bring your check book. We will have some beautiful things, and after all, how many opportunities are there to shop and help our young people?
One of the outstanding items we will auction is a handmade sled, donated by Howard Luke. It is a child's sled, beautifully made in the traditional way. It is a work of art, and would be a gift of love. Photos are available from the regional office, and we are accepting sealed bids prior to the conference. Thank you Mr. Luke for this beautiful gift. Your sled is carrying our young people to their future.
